Concluding Remarks

As with all design processes, there are always some potential issues that may arise. Firstly, it is very difficult to be able to take into account every possible scenario and how it may play out. For example, there exists a lot of gray area or uncertainty with how the evolution of the human species will occur in ten thousand years. Secondly, it is trivial to try to assume that any of these symbols will be recognized and given the same meanings in the future. Thirdly, we cannot discount weather and environmental changes. Acid rain or something similar may erode or degrade the granite and cause it to deteriorate at a faster pace than it would naturally. Another example is that sediments may start to form, which will begin to cover the pyramid. We tried compensating for this by making the pyramid very large. Also, the sheer size of the pyramid will give it a heavy mass, making it harder for someone to steal/remove. A last example is that dirt and sand may start to accumulate in all the grooves found in the pyramid, therefore making all the details of the sign less visible. This could be solved by having a cleaning crew that can maintain the pyramids and get rid of any deposits that build up.
In conclusion, we believe that we devised a simple, yet effective, warning system. If all the visual aspects of the sign somehow fail to reach the future generations, we hope that the radiation housed within the symbol itself will warn them. We strongly believe that this sign will provide enough information for the people of the future to understand and be cautioned about the dangers that lie beneath Yucca Mountain.
